A MUM of four, whose husband worked at Beckton Gas Station, died from asbestos exposure after washing his dusty overalls, an inquest heard.
Irene Gray, of Farm Close, Dagenham, contracted Mesothelioma decades after she first came into contact with asbestos through her husband, Stanley's, job as a boiler maker.
Despite her light exposure to the substance, Irene developed the cancer in her lungs and died at home on August 2 this year, she was 83.
Her daughter, Patricia Fowler, told Walthamstow Coroner's Court on Wednesday November 11 that her mum worked at an ammunition factory in Woolwich as a teenager and may have been exposed to asbestos there.
She also said Barking and Dagenham council removed an asbestos roof from her parent's home 30 years ago.
But Coroner Dr Elizabeth Stearns felt the most likely cause of Irene's malignant Mesothelioma was washing her husband's dusty boiler suit.
"Your mother always washed your father's overalls," she said. "And in those days the boiler pipe lagging that used to be used was asbestos based."
Patricia recalled that her father would come home from work covered in dust, although he did not contract an asbestos related illness later in life.
"He worked at Beckton for a good 30 years," she said. "But as far as we know he died 10 years before mum of bronchial pneumonia."
In May this year Irene became very ill with pains in her chest, she was admitted to Queen's Hospital, Romford, where doctors diagnosed the Mesothelioma.
Patricia added: "I knew something wasn't right before mum went into hospital.
"We were walking along Clacton seafront and she had to stop and sit down constantly.
"When she gave up her knitting I knew it was really serious."
Irene was released from hospital in July and went home where she was nursed by her children, staff from St Francis Hospice and district nurses.
She died after a visit from her son who had to travel from Bristol. Patricia said she had been "hanging on to say goodbye to us all".
A post-mortem by Dr Peter Tanner at King George Hospital, Goodmayes, concluded Irene died from a malignant Mesothelioma tumour on her right lung.
Recording her verdict, Coroner Dr Stearns, said Irene died from malignant Mesothelioma as a result of asbestos exposure, most likely washing her husband's overalls.

How Mesotheliomas Occur
Mesotheliomas usually begin in the lungs or abdomen before they spread to other parts of body (they usually do not spread to the brain, bone or adrenal glands). The mechanism by which mesotheliomas occur has not been properly elucidated. It is possible that deposition of asbestos fibers in the mesothelium causes diverse interactions with the mesothelial cells and induces reactions with the defensive mechanisms of the body. These cause the mesothelium to become abnormal and divide without control and order. It then metastasizes to other parts of the body.
Types of Mesothelioma
1. Epithelioid mesothelioma: This is the most common type of mesothelioma and usually has a better outcome than other types.
2. Mixed or Biphasic mesothelioma: This is the second most common type. It has features of epithelioid and sarcomatoid mesotheliomas.
3. Sarcomatoid or Fibroid mesothelioma: This is the least common type.
Mesotheliomas are also named according to tissue from which they originate. When they originate in the pleura, they are called pleural mesotheliomas; when they occur in the pericardium, they are called pericardial mesotheliomas, and so on.
Risk Factors for Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma occurs in a person who has been exposed to asbestos such as from inhaling asbestos particles or from exposure to asbestos dust or fibers. It is occurs more commonly in people who work with asbestos but there are also other risk factors for mesothelioma

Australian experts are offering new hope to mesothelioma sufferers, claiming a breakthrough in the treatment of the aggressive cancer.
Specialists at the Austin Health Centre in Victoria have discovered a new radiation technique which can improve the life expectancy for sufferers.
Every year, around 700 Australians find out they have mesothelioma. The deadly cancer, which attacks the lungs, is mostly caused by exposure to asbestos.
On average sufferers are given just two years to live after diagnosis.
Dr Malcolm Feigen, a Radiation Oncologist at the Austin Health Centre in Victoria, has for the past seven years been developing new techniques for treating mesothelioma, involving high doses of radiotherapy.
"Gradually with new technologies and better equipment we've been able to increase our doses and look at the results by doing PET scans before they start the radiotherapy and PET scans after they've finished to see what difference we've made," he said.
"And we've been very impressed that in most cases there's a considerable improvement in the activity of the tumour masses that we've given high doses of radiotherapy. And most patients have got through the course of treatment with no major side effects and some have had long-term benefits."
Dr Feigen says patients treated only with chemotherapy mostly have short-term benefits and then the cancer comes back.
"But with radiotherapy it doesn't come back in the same area and if we find patients early enough we may be able to stop any further developments of their disease," he said.
All up, 13 patients were involved in the pilot program.
Dr Feigen says most had surgery prior to radiotherapy. He says the treatment has given the patients an average two years more to live.
"Some patients go on to have a number of good years before sometimes the tumour comes back in areas that we haven't been able to give radiotherapy to," he said.
"Some have had chemotherapy before they see us or afterwards and that does provide an additional benefit, but not always, and we think that most of the symptoms are relieved more effectively by high doses of radiotherapy than these other alternatives."
Dr Feigen will present his findings to a national oncology conference on the Gold Coast next week.
He is hoping to encourage other leading cancer centres to take part in further research.
The CEO of the Cancer Council of Australia, Professor Ian Olver, says the findings are promising and he welcomes the push for further studies.
"I think it's an important finding that radiation has a useful role along with other therapies, not so much on its own, so they've really found the niche for radiotherapy in this disease," he said.
