Zicam is marketed as a cold remedy and has been linked to the loss of smell and/ or taste. It has been reported that one person who used Zicam two or three times to address his cold experienced a burning sensation in his nose every time. Further, he stated that Zicam did not provide relief from cold symptoms but actually made them worse. A week after using Zicam, he noticed that he had lost his sense of smell and taste. After a couple of months had passed without a recovery of the senses of smell and taste, he became very worried.
After meeting with an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor and undergoing an MRI, he learned that he had suffered damage to the nerve endings in his nose that resulted in a permanent loss of smell (anosmia). He believes that his loss of smell was most likely due to the use of Zicam.
