(IsraelNN.com) Prolonged exposure to asbestos has given Nahariya one of the highest rates of mesothelioma in the world, according to a new study by director of the Israeli Health Ministry's Cancer Registry Dr. Micha Bar-Hana. His research found a mesothelioma rate of 5.72 people per 100,000 from 2002 to 2008, when a total number of 19 patients were diagnosed with the disease.
The northern city housed an asbestos plant until it was shut down in 1997. Dr. Bar-Hana believes the number of cases will rise in the future due to the long latency period associated with mesothelioma and other asbestos-related cancers. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Genoa, Italy is the city with the highest rate of asbestos-related diseases in the world, with a rate of 5.8 cases per 100,000 residents.
